In the Beginning

The Captain's chair was comfortable, but the days events taught Sera that sitting in it added the weight of the Galaxy to her shoulders. She barely had enough time to let out a disappointed sigh before a voice shattered the silence.
"Computer, end program!"
Captain Johannson stepped forward from what had been the Captain's ready room, but had just dissolved back into the cold black with yellow striped walls of the hologram. "Cadet Williams, the Kobayashi Maru has been lost. What do you have to say for yourself?"
Sera took a short moment to gather her thoughts. She looked down at her uniform, the sleeve was still ripped and her her was a mess, but the blood and soot from the exploding consoles had vanished along with the rest of the bridge into the hologram abyss. With a salute, and a small hint of pride, she managed to respond, "Sir, I managed to take one of them with me." In reality, she had been scared out of her wits and her adrenaline was still pumping. It took all of her will to stay steady in front of her instructor and her other classmates who were just now "resurrecting" from their heroic deaths aboard the Kobayashi Maru.
"Indeed Cadet, a better performance than I would have thought. I especially enjoyed the part when you stood at Tactical and said 'today is a good day to die,' before detonating your warp core in the midst of the Romulans. Tell me, why did you blow up the freighter first?" asked the instructor.
"Captain, it was clearly a trap. Why else would three Romulan D'deridex Warbirds lie in wait around a civilian vessel when they could've just taken the prisoners and demanded ransom?"
Captain Johanson gave a nod of approval and said, "That is an interesting point. What did you learn?"
Sera's green eyes quickly turned to where the Captain's Chair had been only moments earlier, then back to her instructor. With confidence, she said, "Sir, I learned that while I'm not yet ready to fill the chair... I know I am one day meant to be there."
"Very good Miss Williams. Let's take a walk." replied Johannson.
Sera replied with a "Yes, Sir!" She then gave her fellow classmates a grateful nod and wave as she followed the Captain out of the holodeck.
"As you know Williams, graduation isn't far from now. With that comes your first assignment." With those words, the old Captain reached into his captain's jacket pocket to produce a datapad. He then handed it to Sera with a smile, and added "Congratulations, Miss Williams."
Sera barely heard her instructor's voice as she took the tablet and read what was on the screen. Her first assignment would be the Miranda-Class USS Portland as Assistant Chief Engineer under Captain Alenis Meru. Her hopes were either Engineering or Tactical, so she was happy with the development. She would make her way to Deep Space Nine and rendezvous with the Portland. The fear of all that had just happened immediately gave way to excitement. She could have leaped into the Captain's arms and danced through the corridor, but that would have been unbecoming of an "about-to-graduate" Star Fleet future officer. Instead, she smiled at Captain Johannson and gave her best attempt to hide her excitement, "Thank you, Sir. I'll make you proud"
She couldn't wait to tell her parents, sister and her friends. T'Var, her Vulcan roomate and best friend, would certainly be the first to hear... even though the T'Var might not show the same level of excitement because, you know, Vulcans.
