Alenis let out a slight chuckle as she walked into the school on board the USS Portland. From what she had been told, this space had been previously used as the Marine HQ. Surely, a number of marines would be bothered by the thought of a bunch of hyperactive six to sixteen year old kids running around their briefing room, using their old weapons lockers to store their Flotter & Friends lunch boxes.
"Mommy!" shouted a little six year old, making a beeline towards Alenis' leg. Before Alenis could react, the child had wrapped herself tightly around her left leg. "I've missed you so much. I coloured a picture of-" Realizing her mistake, the little girl let go of Alenis and backed away. "You're not my mommy!"
"No, I'm not." Alenis kneeled down, closer to her level, and smiled at the little girl. "My name is Meru. I'm the ship's captain. What's your name?"
"My name is..." the little girl blushed, her shyness taking over. "...Jillian."
"Jillian," repeated Alenis. "That's a very pretty name."
"My mom gave it to me. Are you someone's mom?"
"No..." replied Alenis, chuckling slightly as she thought about the question. She didn't have any children. Not that she didn't want any, but her career had always came first, and it was difficult at best for her to commit to a steady relationship, much less children. "I'm a friend of your teacher. Do you know where she is?"
"I believe she's in the other room." Novia said, stepping over from where shed neatly laid out her things on her bunk. She looked at the Captain with a curious expression. "Are we going to see Nebula's and the like? That should be fun. And a stellar nursery, some machine people, a sub dwarf, a rogue planet with life forms, at least black holes, a magnetar and some Romulans if you could, thank you." Novia smiled knowing her list was probably beyond realistic, but she wasn't on Trill anymore and was hoping to get something to take her mind off that.
"That's a big list," replied Alenis, looking into the eyes of the little Trill girl. "You're very curious, aren't you?"
"It's a requirement." She chirped up proudly. "There are many things still to be discovered and it's about time we do so."
"That's great. Always be curious. You never know what you might learn, and if you don't stop being curious, you might even become a famous scientist someday." Seeing the little girl smile, she continued. "I'm going to tell you a little secret." She lowered her voice to a whisper. "Right now, we're going to a jungle planet to try to make some new friends with people who landed there 500 years ago. You like making new friends, don't you?"
Novia looked a little wide eyed for a moment. "I will need a proper tricorder. Perhaps I can discover a new plant or alien monkey." Novia ran back to look for a proper 'scanning the jungle' outfit. She then remembered her manners and returned to the Captain. "By your leave of course Miss Captain, ma'am."
"I'll see what I can do," replied Alenis. "We might be able to make some room on an away team for you," she added with a wink. With that, she turned towards the former Marine CO's office, hastily converted to a teacher's office. From the window, she could make out a shock of teal hair, giving away the identity of the occupant as that of her old friend Rostrenen.
"Rostrenen," she called out, attempting to divert her attention from the lesson plan on her desk.
“Meru!” exclaimed Ros as she got up from her desk. “What are you doing here?”
“I just wanted to visit an old friend and see how she was settling in,” replied Alenis. “And thank you for helping me relax the other day.” From under her arm, she produced a long, flat box. “I remembered how much you loved Betazoid chocolates, and heard good things about the chocolatier on DS9…”
“Thank you.” Ros embraced Meru, hugging her perhaps more tightly than her thin frame would be expected to be capable of. As she did so, she took the opportunity afforded by close physical contact to read her friend’s emotions. Not that she really needed to; as an observer of the humanoid condition, she could tell that something was weighing on her shoulders. “…but you didn’t need to do that,” she added, placing the chocolates on her desk. “I am a guest on your ship, along with the children. It was the least I could do. Never mind all those times you stood up for me at the academy.”
“Oh please,” replied Alenis. “We’ve both come a long way since our academy days.”
“Indeed, we have.” Looking at the contrast between the two – the neatly dressed Starfleet captain and the punkish civilian with piercings and brightly coloured hair – it was hard to imagine that they had anything in common. “Tell me, Meru, how have you been doing since last we met?”
“Me?” asked Alenis. “Well, it’s been quite some time since the last time we talked. I guess I’ve been doing well; I’ve been given a command of my own. My career has never looked brighter. And…” Alenis smiled. Her smile was one which could warm an entire room, and coupled with her dark, expressive eyes, it gave her a certain, as the French say, je ne sais quoi. “I’ve been reunited with a lost lover.”
“That is wonderful,” replied Ros, “but you’re not telling me everything. I’m detecting some pain; there is something weighing heavily on your shoulders.”
“Well, being a Starfleet captain is a very stressful job.” Alenis tried to deflect the question.
“No, it is something… deeper than that.”
At that moment, they were interrupted by the whine of a precocious little 11 year old. “Miss Rostrenen, maam,” called out Novia Yenn, standing in the doorway. “We’re late for our algebra lesson.”
“Ah yes, my apologies, Novia, I know how much you like algebra,” said Ros, looking down at the little girl. “Meru, we will have to continue this conversation at a later date,” she said, guiding Novia back into the classroom.
