Name: Amata Zan
Species: Bajoran
Gender: Male
Age/Date of Birth: 36 / 02/06/2356
Position: Assistant Chief Security Officer
Rank: Lieutenant (JR)
Physical Description: Standing 1.96 metres tall with a muscular frame and a broad build, Amata Zan is a man both suited and shaped by his chosen profession to the point of cliché. He has strong, stern facial features that give the impression that the Bajoran is typically in a sour mood. As Security postings typically require a high level of physicality and skill, Amata keeps himself excellent condition, priding himself in exceeding even the higher standards set by the Starfleet Marine Corps. His nasal ridges are somewhat atypical, as they include a single vertical ridge that bisects the usually horizontal ones, topped by two small “wing-tips” on his brow. This is an atavistic trait similar to diastema (gap toothed) in humans.
Life has caused him disconnect himself from the Bajoran religion and the society that it permeates, distrusting not the scriptures themselves, but the influence and authority that his people’s faith grant the planet’s religious leaders, some of whose interpretations of the Prophet’s teachings are far too dogmatic for his tastes. Amata has instead shifted the loyalty to the Fleet and its ideals, swapping the expected D'jarra signaling ear piece with tattoos that trace their origins back to Starfleet tradition, all typically hidden under Amata's duty dress. Besides the Fleeter tattoos, the lieutenant has a line of Bajoran script in plain black ink on both of his inner forearms, readers of the language would identify them as somewhat common female given names. He keeps his head nearly bald, though he always keeps a short growth of stubble on his head and face.
Personality Traits: Having endured much, first as a child of Bajor and then as a man of the Fleet, Amata has learned to live a mostly spartan, simply life, valuing things of substance and character. This does not mean that his life is a lonely or leisure less one though. Rather, he is a quiet and affable person who keeps his social sphere and wants small. Following this, his speech is laconic and his arguments are a matter of fact, based in reason and integrity, which can sometimes cause him to come across as standoffish.
While well-educated and far traveled, Amata is tolerant and welcoming of the many different cultures he has come across within the Federation, finding the infinite variation both inspiring and enduring. He is especially inclined towards cultures with liberal leanings, as well as those that place a special value in personal freedom. On the other hand, the Bajoran has certain professional and personal grievances against certain foreign groups bordering Federation space, if not the peoples whom form them and the ideals they claim. At times, these grudges can cause almost prejudicial caution when dealing with representatives of these governments; these groups include the Cardassian Union, the Klingon Empire, and Dominion.
His main hobbies are hologames, literature and martial arts.
Like many members of the fleet, Amata speaks several languages, Bajoran, Cardassian, Federation Standard, and Klingon death threats.
History: Amata Zan and his twin sister Amn were born on Bajor to Amata Vanna, a woman living in the city of Jalanda, who had become involved with the Bajoran resistance. Eventually, when the children were four, the small family was sent to a mining camp after the man identified on records as the father was found among Resistance dead by Occupation Forces. Zan was not aware of this until the Occupational Government's records became available to him years later.
Amata can only remember as far back as camp with any clarity, his family relocation to the cold, grey mines only a vague memory. The children’s’ mother died after three years of forced labour, her death stemming from a combination of exhaustion, malnutrition, and Tartha pox. The twins were seven, just old enough to work themselves under Occupation law. From then till the age of thirteen, Zan and Amn spent their days loading rocks into mining carts in exchange for rations. This was their so called childhood, complete with an education that consisted solely of brief verbal lessons about Bajoran literature and religions, lest the guards find out and punish all involved, and quick pieces of advice offered by the adult labourers out of pity. The advice was as practical as it was dark, including how to apologize without angering the guards to how to take a beating while suffering the least severe of injuries.
It was with some of these adults that the siblings stayed after the Cardassian left and their camp was emancipated by the Resistance, though none of the survivors were in any shape to serve as legal guardians. After several months of medical treatments and adjustment to what was the extensive culture shock of a world lacking Cardassian guards, Amn emigrated to New Bajor with their group while Zan stayed on behind on Bajor to enrolled in a Federation sponsored education program with the intent to learn more about the literal and figurative new world that had been opened up to him. The next year, a month before Zan was scheduled to visit his sister and friends, the Dominion attacked the colony, there were no known survivors.
After this, Zan switched his focus to joining the Bajoran Military Academy, spending the next two years deep in his studies, learning to write the two languages he spoke and to speak and write a third, to understand and deconstruct the literature of his world and others, comprehend scientific theory thousands of year beyond a childhood loading a mining cart with ore and stone, fueled by an angry, patriotic dream of protecting his home and people from the dangers of space. And then, for the briefest time, Bajor restored D'jarra caste based solely on the religious weight carried in the worlds of a time traveling poet from a century past. These events made little sense to the young student, who, at only sixteen, was excelling in his studies and was already built like a solider, but was told that his D'jarra was unclean and that his role in life was to prepare the dead for burial and defer to his betters.
When life continued, and Bajor went back to its previous normal, Zan didn't. How the majority of people were willing follow the whims of a few based solely on the faith that it had been the will of the Prophets, didn't, and never would, sit well with him. Any plans that Zan had that included Bajor ended here and then. The teen enlisted in Starfleet as soon as he was able. This was perhaps an odd choice for an adolescent with a distrust of authority during such a hostile time, but it was the only way he could think of to get away from Bajor.
After fleet basic, Amata was assigned to the USS Tian An Man as Crewman Apprentice, unskilled muscle kept around to lift heavy objects, answering to the Operations Department. After the Man was recovered from been thought lost near the Cardassian border, Amata reported to occupational training in Security. Besides one ground forces rotation, Amata spent most of the war assigned to the Man, guarding weapons lockers, being drilled in anti-boarding procedures and evacuation duties, flying into battle in a century old ship class that seemed to be little more than "weapons-feed,” as more and more Mirandas were lost with every engagement with the Dominion. After the war and a brief posting on a Federation Starbase, Zan returned to civilian life on Bajor. This lasted less than a year due to several personal and occupational failures on his part; he re-enlisted near the end of the calendar year.
Since then, Amata has become a career fleeter, finding stability in its structure and embracing its doctrine of exploration and personal growth, though to him, much of the Federation itself is still unknown. He has continued to advance his occupational and leadership training, rising up through the enlisted ranks, specializing in Close Protection and later the VIP Bodyguard services. This specialization has led to Amata having been assigned to multiple planet-side postings, which eventually allowed him to attend university via a Starfleet Educational Sponsorship. Around the time Zan received his degree, he applied for a commission under the recommendation of his superior officer. He was then transferred to Beta Ursae Minor II for a three week billet as an Occupational Instructor before enrolling in a Department Management Course. His first assignment as an officer was the post of Assistant Chief Security Officer aboard USS Asil, his previous experience as an enlisted placing him above the younger ensigns assigned to the small department.
After two years on the USS Asil, Amata has been transferred to the Portland.
