Character Information:
Name: Eilis Grace Ross
Rank: Civilian
Position: Teacher
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Age: 32
Physical Appearance:
Height: 5’7
Weight: 140lbs
Hair Colour: Grey
Eye Colour: Blonde
Physical Description:
At 5'7, Eilis considers herself to be of an average height. Her hair is always pulled back into a messy ponytail, not quite caring unless it is falling into her face. When loose, it falls down to the small of her back. Freckles cover the bridge of her nose and sprinkle the rest of her body. She also wears glasses, too stubborn to have corrective surgery done on her eyes.
General Overview:
Eilis is an extremely laid back woman. While in no way can she be perceived as being shy, she is not outgoing. In her personal life; friends, family and acquaintances enjoy being in her presence as they feel that they can be themselves around her and not have to stand on any formalities. The one disadvantage she finds to being so laid back is that even though she may argue for something she feels passionate about, she is generally slow to take sides in an argument.
As Eilis transited into teaching of youngsters, she found that she needed to adjust her personality in order to suit children. She needed to be firm and make children realise that that she was the adult in charge and while they could view her as somebody to talk to if they needed an adult, they also needed to understand that she was there to help teach.
Strengths & Weaknesses:
Amongst Eilis' strengths she counts her devotion to her love of being able to help shape and mold young minds. She keeps up to date with research papers concerning young children and adolescents in both the areas of mental and physical development. This enables her to always be up to date on various techniques she may use depending on the child she may encounter.
Because Eilis also educates in a Starfleet environment, she tries to continue expanding on the languages she speaks and also to read up on the various traditions which exist to each race. She wishes to be able to ensure that whatever race of child she is entrusted with that she can educate them in an inclusive environment.
Eilis’ past has also taught her to always be strong and persevere no matter the situation she found herself in. This could be situations in which she needed to aid students who were struggling or even situations in which she maybe had been hurt and needed to bounce back, ensuring it didn't impact on the work that she did.
Eilis' main weakness is her tendency to over-analyse. She works hard to keep this out of her place of work as a hesitancy to analyse a situation could show a weakness to children which may cause them to rebel or act out.

Eilis does not consider herself to be an ambitious person. Being a civilian working in a Starfleet environment; she just strives to be the best teacher she can, no matter the age group she is entrusted with.

History:
Eilis was born Stephen and Jennifer Ross. After Eilis, Jennifer was told that she could have no further children through a natural birth. Having one child, Stephen and Jennifer decided that they were happy with this and focused all of their attention onto Eilis, raising her in California on the West Coast of America.
Eilis lead a very sheltered childhood with her parents; they doted on her.
Eilis knew from a very young age that she wished to work in an occupation which would bring her into close contact with children of all ages; to try recoup some of the childhood that she felt she lost due to being a sole child.
At the age of 18, Eilis left home to study education in the San Francisco branch of the University of California, wanting to stay near home. After four years of undergraduate study, the teacher went on to do a two year work placement, which would allow her to become a fully qualified teacher. This was part of the Federation initiative where they were trying to encourage more families to make homes on their starships. As part of this, the soon to be teacher found herself placed on the USS Birmingham, shadowing a woman who had been teaching for 20 years, Claire O’Reilly. This woman was to become a mentor to Eilis and a confidant during the more difficult times.
Even though she had grown up in San Francisco, Eilis had never given consideration to Starfleet prior to this placement, not wanting to be far from her parents. She now wondered if this was the opportunity which she needed: A chance to explore and broaden her horizons. Having never strayed from home before, maybe now was the time. Her parents were against this. They did not want their only daughter away from them but they also realised that Eilis would do what she wanted, no matter what they tried. They also recognised she was right. A fresh start could be ideal.
Finally finding her niche, Eilis remained onboard the USS Birmingham as a teachers’ assistant for a further 5 years before the opportunity arose for her to take on a position of her own, on another of the Federation's ships.
Scared and uncertain, Eilis was loath to leave a ship she had become so familiar with. She knew the kids and they knew her; to take a step away would be like taking a step into the deep unknown.
Knowing her fears, Eilis’ mentor talked her through her fears. She persuaded Eilis that now was the right time for her to go out on her own; to take on a job which she could make her own. Claire had no doubts that Eilis would make a good teacher on her own and asked that Eilis trust her in this.
