Name: Daniel Tobin
Rank: Lieutenant JG
Position: Chief Intelligence Officer
Species: Human (1/8th Vulcan)
Gender: Male
Date of Birth: January 18, 2357 (age 34)
Place of Birth: New Sydney
Description:
Tobin stands at six feet. He remains thin despite all his efforts at exercise. He keeps his hair trimmed short, although he's been known to let it grow out when he's obsessed with a particular assignment. He shows no signs of his Vulcan heritage.
Tobin generally adopts a relaxed and warm attitude, even when on duty. He's found that it helps when he needs to deliver bad news.
Out of concern for her descendants, Tobin's great-grandmother has attempted to train him in Vulcan logic. To date, Tobin has only utilized these lessons during times of extreme stress, to better focus himself on the task at hand.
Tobin tries to learn the name of each member of the crew - or at least, those he finds himself often seeing. He aims to be on at least congenial terms with everyone he meets. When he isn't, he goes out of his way to set things right - almost to the point of obsession.
Biography:
Daniel Tobin was born and raised on New Sydney. He originally worked under Drezna Vike, a friend of his mother's and a political candidate. Like many, Tobin admired Vike. Vike's political aspirations were cut short when Starfleet revealed Vike not only had illegitimate children, but was attempting to have them killed before they ruined his career.
Now that his hero and role model had been discovered to be a fraud, Tobin enlisted with Starfleet. He was first posted to the USS Semblance, which was monitoring the Romulan Neutral Zone.
The task was often dull, and the Semblance's Intelligence Officers passed the time by trading stories of the Federation's more questionable decisions. Tobin discovered not only the Federation's refusal to offer a cure to the Founders, but that the cure had been used as leverage to end the war. The knowledge shook Tobin's beliefs in the Federation's stances - a sinister crime had saved millions of lives, perhaps more. Tobin became more willing to accept lesser evils.
Being so close to Romulan borders, the Semblance was tasked with providing aid during the fall of Romulus.
It was later pulled to repel a Borg attack. During the battle, the Semblance's upper decks were destroyed - including the bridge. For twenty minutes, Tobin had his first command. He ordered the ship to be abandoned. He and his crew were rescued by the USS Albany, where he and other able-bodied crew were immediately put to work repairing the badly damaged Albany as it continued the battle.
The Albany (now staffed with half of the Semblance's crew) took the Semblance's place providing aid to the Romulans.
The Albany eventually was destroyed by a Breen raid while carrying a Romulan official, who had information on the Romulan Fleet's movements. The Albany's crew managed to beam to a nearby planet. The planet's periodic storms scrambled sensors and prevented the Breen from beaming up the official. Unwilling to wait for the storms to pass, the Breen continued their assault on foot. The Albany's crew held their position for two weeks. Using salvaged components from the crashed Albany, Tobin devised a plan with the ship's engineer. A holographic array was secretly assembled, and a hologram of the official was "killed" by the Breen. The Breen, robbed of their prize, left. A Warbird rescued the remnants of the Albany's crew and returned them to Federation space.
